PKISIS ECR ION SOURCE

PKISIS ECR Ion SourcePK-ISIS 18GHz is an ECR ion source with hybrid magnetic circuit - Superconducting for axial and Permanent magnet for radial fields. The axial field is generated by three low temperature superconducting coils (4 K) cooled by a single cryo-cooler.

pkisisThe design of the new PK-ISIS is being pursued. Mostly of the magnetic circuit as well as the injection side of the source, where RF feeding, oven and sputtering systems are placed, were designed. The overall drawing of PKISIS is shown in the left picture, whereas the right picture shows the injection side of the source.

The axial field is generated by three low temperature superconducting coils (4 K) cooled by a single 1Wpkisis_sourcecryo-cooler, not shown in thepicture. Most of the problems generated by the strong forces between

the coils and the iron yoke were solved. These forces can be as high as 200 kN between components.
The hexapole of PK-ISIS is a critical part of the ion source. Special tools were develop for its assembly. The total volume of the hexapole is of 40 liters, with two magnetic shells.

The extraction zone concept is based in our successful hadrontherapy standard, but the drawing was improved. The insulation of each electrode, which are now under vacuum, was improved. The electrodes are also cooled, as in our previous version.

Metallic beam production will be made by our standard sputtering or new oven systems (see PK-news number 1).

Comparing the volume, field shape and intensity with existing ECR ion sources, PK-ISIS 18 GHz is expected to give beam intensities as high as 1 mA for Ar (8+) and more than 50 μA for Ar (14+) ions in DC mode. Afterglow should allow higher intensities in pulsed mode.

Double frequency injection will be not implemented in our first version of PKISIS. However, this can be implemented in the future. Moreover, space in the injection side is available for installing larger ovens, if needed.

PK-ISIS is conceived for easy maintenance. Two chariots, the first for the  body of the source and a second
for the injection, allows easy opening of the whole ensemble and easy access of
the chamber.. The chamber is made by a single cylinder, which allows also the use of PK-ISIS as charge booster, if a beam injection would be installed in the injection side of the source.
The first PK-ISIS will be completed for testing in autumn 2009. First beam is expected by November 2009
